PREFACE.

ACCORDING to Solomon, " the glory of the cliildren is their fathers."
To the wise followers of this wise King, themks are given for their help
and kind encouragement. To those who follow St. Paul's advice (I Tim.
I, 4 and Titus III, 9), apology is due for the trouble they ha\c been put to.

The object of this compilation is to enable the present and future generations
to understand relationships, w^hich though simple to the forefathers, become
more complicated to each succeeding generation. The older generations were
mostly members of the Society of Friends, and their descendants should feel
proud of their ancestors, appreciating that from them thev ha\e ])robabl\-
inherited many good qualities.

The Genealogical Trees are not complete nor, strictly S])eaking, scientilic,
and are only meant to show the connections and relationship with other
descendants.

In a book of this kind, errors are apt to slip in. E\erv care has been
taken and proofs submitted for correction.

It is, however, hoped to issue at some future time an appendix containing
a corrigenda and additional information.

There are also many blank spaces where photographs should be. The
binding is arranged so as to enable additional photographs to be fixed. The
Compiler proposes to continue the collection and reproduction of photographs,
and to issue them from time to time as may be desired.

The Indices are an important feature of the book. B\- them the relation-
ship of any two persons can be ascertained.

The use of the Indices will be understood by the following examples ; —
Two persons (say Y and Z) have respectively indices II A 5 c (I) and IV G 8 b.
II and IV indicate the 1st generation m \iolet colour, \iz. brothers or sisters ;
A and G indicate 2nd generation in green colour, \iz. 1st cousins ; 5 and 8
indicate 3rd generation in black, \iz. 2nd cousins ; c and b indicate 4th genera-
tion in red, viz. 3rd cousins ; (I) indicates 5th generation in blue belonging to
Y. Therefore Y is 3rd cousin once remo\ed to Z.

or I B and III A 2 d (III)

1 and III = brothers or sisters.
B and A = 1st cousins.

2 = 1st cousin once remoxed.
d = 1st cousin twice removed.
(Ill) = 1st cousin thrice removed.

or I and III A 2 d (III).

1 and III ^ brothers or sisters.
A — nephew or niece.

2 = grand nephew or grand niece

d = great grand nephew or great grand niece.

(Ill) = great great grand nephew or great great grand

niece.

Messrs. Elliott & Fry haxe kindly gi\ en permission to reproduce some of
their copyright photographs.

R. SEYMOUR BENSON.

INTRODUCTION.

Isaac Wilson, born at High Wray, in January, 1715, died at Kendal, August,
1785, aged 70, married at Kendal about 1764 Rachel Wilson, daughter of
John Wilson and his wife Deborah Wilson. She was born at Kendal in
February, 1720, and died in March, 1775, aged 55. Rachel Wilson was
the great granddaughter on her mother's side of William Wilson, of Lane
Head, Kendal (whose father is said to have lived to the age of 136 years).
He married Anne Stoute of Lancaster, and died in 1720 at the age of 109
by falling from a haystack.

Rachel Wilson's sister, Mary, married Roger Wakeheld, whose daughter
Deborah, married George Benson, see Tree (page 407). Other descendants
being the families of Cropper, Willink, Weston, Keightley.

Her sister, Deborah Wilson, married William Birkbeck, a c/ud the families of
Badcock, Stansfeld, Hornor, Gurney.

Her sister, Sarah Wilson, married John Birkbeck, a quo the families of Pierson,
Bulkeley.

Her younger sister, Hannah Wilson, married John Barnard, a quo the families
Dickinson, Darby, Fowler, c\:c.

The father of Isaac Wilson was Anthony Wilson, who was born in 1673,
and died in 1755, aged 82, ha\ing married Dorothy Benson.

The Wilson forefathers had emigrated to Ireland in the reign of Henry IV.
The following is an extract from an old record : —

" The grandfather of Anthoii}- had come back to England in a state of great
poxerty, and, with his family, had walked from Whitehaven over Hard Knott
and Wrynose, two rocky mountains over which the old Pack Horse road from
Whiteha\en to Ambleside is still (1838) to be found, and finding employment
at Little Langdale, near Hawkshead, had settled there. Anthony becoming
acquainted with Dorothy Benson, called on her father one day to obtain his
consent to their marriage, and on his being asked what means he had of support-
ing her, replied " My own hands and the blessing of God," which so pleased
old George Benson that he immediately consented to their union, which took
place in May, 1702. Both with numerous descendants and worldly prosperity
they were signalh' favoured. Anthony built the house of High Wray,
Windermicre, in 1728."

Henry was Anthony's grandfather who came o\er from Ireland. He
farmed some land in Little Langdale, having married in 1639. Anthony's
father, John, is described as "gentleman of Little Langdale," born 2nd
February, 1641, and died Jnne, 1675.

Dorothy Benson, born at Stang End, Langdale, 17th February, 1678,
was the only daughter of George Benson and his wife, Margaret Braithwaite
(supposed to' be the sister of George Braithwaite of Hawkeshead, the great grand-
father of George Braithwaite who married Deborah Wilson, see page 115).
Dorothy married at 24 and died 23rd May, 1755, aged 77. The descendants
from this marriage cover most of the eminent members of the Society of Friends.
For the ancestors of Dorothy, see Tree on pages 406 and 407, which range
back to Thomas Benson. Lord of Ryssup in 1109.
