Mr. Spalding was a prominent man in the town where he resided,
and during forty years, he serA^ed in all the important offices of the
town and the parish, and had all the honors that his fellow-citizens
could bestow. He served as executor ,fadmiuistrator, or guardian
in the settlement of twenty estates, and was the guardian of twenty
orphans.

He commenced the practice of medicine in Wilton, Me., in 1805 ;
he practised in Lower Canada and Vermont, but mostly in the
upper settlements on the Kennebec River, in the towns of Bingham,
Concord, and Moscow ; he served the public eleven j^ears as clerk,
selectman, and assessor ; he held a commission as justice of tlie
peace twentj^-one years, during which time he solemnized forty-
two marriages. He appeared twice before the public as an au-
thor. The title of his second book was, " The Female Guide to
Health."

" My father commenced i)reaching at thirty years of age, and
preached thirty-tiv€ years. He was connected with the Free- Will

Baptist denomhiation. He was settled in Belgrade, Me., and
preached there and in niaiiv other places for about twenty-five
years ; he was frequently settled as pastor of some church, l)esides
travellins: much as an evangelist. After moving to Ohio, he was
settled over churches in Liverpool and Brunswick, Ohio, but his
health failing, he removed to Cleveland, with his son. There being
no chnrch of Ms persuasion there, he united with a Congregational
chinch. He was a constant wi-iter for the Morning Star, printed
at Dover, N. H., and published many sermons. He was a strong
advocate of temperance, being one of the first movers in that
