Mr. Spalding removed from New Ipswich, N. H., to Milton,
N. H.,in 18u0. His father, Capt. Isaac Spalding, was a man of
good education for those times, but never possessed a property of
more than two thousand dollars. His son therefore had a very
limited education, only a few weeks instruction in winter, and was
very earty thrown upon his own resources.

In 1809, at the age of thirteen, he went to Amherst, N. H., as
clerk of Robert Reed, Esq., a leading merchant of that place, with
whom he continued seven years.

About 1816, he became a partner of Mr. Reed, and remained in
that situation ten years, being also for the greater portion of the
time post-master.

In 1826, Mr. Spalding removed to Nashua, where he was a
prominent merchant of the then new and thriving village. After
twelve years in business, he retired from it to eugage iu railroad
enterprises, chiefl}" in the Concord Railroad, with whicia he was
connected for some twent^^-live 3'ears. He was among the first

who saw the importance of a raihoad connection between the lakes
and tide-water, and gave his aid to those enterprises.

He has been a man greatly respected by his own townsmen, and
such was the confidence felt in his impartiality, that in the most
hented political strifes, he would often be chosen moderator by
unanimous consent. He was scA'eral times elected selectman, and
representative of the town in the Legislature ; and after the town
became a city, he served in the board of aldermen. He was a mem-
ber of the Constitutional Convention convened in Concord, Nov.
6,1850; also a member of the Governor's Council in 1866-7 and
1867-8. He was chosen one of the trustees of the State Asylum
for the Insane in 1863, and was elected president of that Board in
1869, succeeding Eev. Charles Burroughs, D. D. He was one of
the earliest friends of the Concord Railroad, and its first treas-
urer ; and from its incorporation in 1885 to 1866, he served either
as treasurer, director, or president. He was for more than twenty-
five 3 ears president of the Nashua Bank, a State institution which
wound up its affairs in 1869, having never made a bad debt or lost
a dollar.

In the late war of the Rebellion, he was appointed Financial
Agent of the Government, and assisted in providing the means of
our country's success.

quired his property by a course of integrit}^ industry, and economy,
