KNOWN AT THE HALL
IT IS considerable of a change from
manager of successful political
campaigns to that of manufacturer of
internationally known facial and scalp
ijreparations, but such is the record of
Harry Schwartz, president of the
Schwartz Medicated Shampoo Com-
pany, 132 Turk Street.
[ Schwartz is a San Franciscan. He
was born on Clementina Street, "South
d' the Slot," September 10, 1876, and
ajttended the famous old Lincoln
Grammar School that has given to
San Francisco scores of splendid pub-
lic officials and sterling business men.
Only eight months have elapsed
since Schwartz started his cosmetics
HARRY SCHWARTZ
business. Demand for his products
has increased to such a degree that
orders for his preparations are pour-
ing in from all parts of the world.
Prior to entering business for him-
self, Schwartz successfully handled
the campaigns of Superior Judge
Shortall, Justices of the Peace Pren-
dergast, Kelly and Dunn, Police Judge
Jacks, the late Supervisor Edwin G.
Bath and Supervisor Warren Shan-
non. His keen foresight and political
analysis developed him into an expert
in political work. His friends are
legion at the City Hall and in Police
Department circles.
Now then, if you are gifted in versi-
fying, essay, joke or slogan writing,
here's a chance for you to share in the
$25 in gold prizes to be offered by the
Schwartz Medicated Shampoo Com-
pany.
Participants are required to write a
verse, jingle, essay, joke, slogan or
anecdote of not more than 100 words
that will tell the value of Schwartz's
Medicated Shampoo over other sham-
poos. For instance, one might say
something like this : "Schwartz's
Medicated Shampoo — It Does What
Others Fail to Do."
Entries should be addressed to Con-
test Editor, Schwartz's Products Co.,
Inc., 132 Turk Street, San Francisco.
The contest will close March 1, 1930,
at noon.
Superior Judge Edward P. Shortall,
Judge Thomas F. Prendergast and
Harry Schwartz, president of the
Schwartz's Products Company, Inc.,
will be the sole judges.
Mueller Company Has
Interesting History
The Mueller Company, at Deca-
tur, 111., manufacturers of plumbing,
water and gas brass goods, has a
most interesting history. The com-
pany was founded by Hieronymus
Mueller in 1857. With the founda-
tion of thorough old country educa-
tion in mechanics, he established
himself in business in Decatur, as
a lock and gunsmith. Although lim-
ited in business extension because
of the small town and sparsely set-
tled country, Mr. Mueller, neverthe-
less, was ambitious and succeeded
in a gradual development of a large
machine shop and later a plumbing
store.
Became City Tapper
In the early 70's the City of De-
catur established a water works.
Mr. Mueller at once saw an oppor-
tunity and established himself as a
plumber, and was appointed to the
position of city tapper. The crude
methods of making service connec-
tions at the main led him to devote
his time and talents to the invention
of the water tapping machine, which
is now used ty practically all water
works plants. This formed the real
foundation of the Mueller Company.
It led in a very modest way to the
establishment of a small brass foun-
dry for the manufacture of corpora-
tion stops and curb stops.
Mr. Mueller ihad six sons. These
boys, as they became of age, were
admitted to the business, and it was
this infusion of younger blood that
resulted in greater expansion of the
Mueller industries. The first of the
big factory buildings now covering
five city blocks was erected and the
entire time and talents of the family
were devoted to the development
of goods for water works and gas
works. This grew rapidly and a
complete plumbing line was added.
In the middle 90's the company was
going good and its growth has been
continuous.
The company now operates a big
plant at Decatur and a similar Ca-
nadian plant at Sarnia, Ontario. The
iron business, including such ar-
ticles as service boxes, service
clamps, etc., was detached from the
main factory and an iron foundry
building was erected at a different
point. The latest addition is the
vitreous ware plant where the com-
pany is now engaged in the manu-
facturing of toilets, lavatories, etc.
Substantial Growrth
The growth and success of the
company has been of a very sub-
stantial character. Each step has
been carefully planned and taken
only when the company was as-
sured that they were prepared for
such an extension.
Of the original six brothers, only
three are living, Adolph, Robert and
Oscar. Through an amicable re-
arrangement of interests a few years
ago the latter took over the big
business established at Port Huron,
Mich., which was built by the De-
catur Company during the war for
the manufacture of munitions, and
afterwards transformed into a cop-
per and brass tube mill, die casting,
forging, etc.
The company's reputation for
quality is explained in the fact that
Mr. Mueller's mechanical training
called for nothing but the best in
workmanship and material, and he
would allow no deviation in the fao
tory. All of his sons' educations
were planned according to the posi-
tion in the firm they would be best
fitted for, so the personnel of the
company is made up of metallurgical,
chemical, mechanical and business
engineers. This, with the unbreak-
able rule of producing nothing but
the highest quality assures the com-
pany's continued success.
Two Coast Branches
They are well represented on the
Pacific Coast, with two branches —
one at San Francisco and one at Los
Angeles — where large stocks are
carried to cover Pacific Coast re-
quirements.
The members of the third genera-
tion have now entered the ranks and
are gradually assuming the burden
of the business.
