A WORD WITH THE OWNERS.

"A MINE of legal lore," said we as we placed the one-hundredth volume
of American Decisions on the shelves. How to work it is now the ques-
tion.

Then we bought the American Reports- another mine -in the same vein
-of the same general character, yet distinct and different.

And now comes the necessity for new implements with which to work
these two mines. They will not yield their wealth as did Hoses' rock,
or Ali Baba's "open sesame." They are mines and they must be worked.
Too many of the owners know little of what is in them, less of how to
get it out, and he who simply places them on the shelves and pays for
them, may rest assured that he will receive little return by way of divi-
dends on his investment.

This book is sent with the compliments of the publishers, to all who
have either the American Decisions or American Reports, as a forerunner
of an Index-Digest to both series in one alphabet, probably in three vol-
umes. That will come slowly. It cannot be well made in a day or a
year, but it will be satisfactory when it is done.

This Table and Index is intended for permanent use-not like preceding in-
dices, as mile-posts, but as marking to some extent the boundary lines between
the series which are now complete and the new series of American State fid-
ports. It will be of value in two directions.

I. It will enable one who has reference to a case, from any source, to
ascertain at once whether or not it is re-reported in either the Decisions or
Reports, and it will inform the reader of a note in either series, from what
State Report a case found in a cross-reference was taken.

II. It will give ready reference to all the most important notes in both
series. It must be understood, however, that only a small portion of the
notes in either series are here referred to. It is an index to the mono-
graphic notes. Notes which consist mainly of cross-references to other vol-
umes of this series, are omitted, and of notes which treat mainly of the
principal case, its citations, and the law of the particular state from which
it is taken, no mention is here made.

With due appreciation of the patronage so cordially extended to our
trinity of reports, we offer this book which will reach its destination

A WORD WITH THE OWNERS.

about the time at which we are all prone to give thanks -as the first aid to
the economical working of the two series, and we ask of our patrons:

First. That they will use the books, to which it is the key; that they
will learn, each for himself, how to use them to best advantage; and,

Second. That having used these books, they will cite them in their opin-
ions, their treatises or digests, or in their briefs.

By so doing they will not only increase the reputation and popularity
of the series which have helped them, but will facilitate the labors of their
co-workers in the law. A double citation referring to the original report,
and to the volume of American Decisions or American Reports, will much
more than double the number of persons to whom the case will be access-
ible.

SAN FRANCISCO, THANKSGIVING DAT, 1888.

POSTSCRIPT.

If you fail to find here the name of the case you are in search of, go
to the Digests and you will find a better one on the same subject.

TABLE OF CASES

He-reported in the 16O Volumes of

AMERICAN DECISIONS

AND

AMERICAN REPORTS.

The arrangement of cases Is as follows: Cases entitled " Appeal of," "Application of," "Case of," "Ex parte," "In
matter of," "In re," "Petition of," will be found under the name of the party; "Will of," under name of
decedent; "Borough of," "City of." "County of," "Town of," "Village of," are under the name of the county,
town, etc. " Doe ex rel." " Den ex dem." etc., appear also under name of real party.

" Bank," "Insurance Co.," and " Eailroad Co.," are arranged under the first important word of title, familiar name*
being in some cases duplicated.

Supplementary words, such as Executor, Administrator, have been omitted, or the cases arranged without reference
to these words. Thus, "Jones' Executor v. Smith," will be found indexed as "Jones v. Smith."

Cases consisting of a single name, as " Brown's Case," " Williams' Petition," "Thompson, Ex parte," etc., precede
the cases of the same name in which the names of both parties are given. Thus, "Brown's Case" precedes
Brown v. Adams.

Roman letters fxlix] refer to volumes of American Decisions, and Arabic figures [40] to American Reports.
