Marriages at Fairfield,

1756 to 1837.

Note. — There was a church at Fairfield in the middle of the 13th
century, which was rebuilt between 1590 and 1600. The present
church was built on the site of the old one in 1839.

The Registers for Baptisms and Burials date from 173S. The
earlier registers were, it is said, destroyed by fire. The Marriage
Registers do not commence till 1756. These are contained (so
far as here published) in three paper volumes, and are very legible.
The books are also in fairly good preservation.

Fairfield was an old chapelry of Hope, and it was customary
for inhabitants of Fairfield to have the banns published at Fair-
field and to have the marriage performed at the mother church.
This no doubt accounts for the comparatively small number of
marriages which appear in the Fairfield Registers. Contrariwise,
Fairfield residents sometimes had the banns published at Hope
and were married at Fairfield, and this latter fact is sometimes
mentioned in the Registers. It therefore follows that the Hope
Registers must also be searched for Fairfield marriages.

The township of Fernilee, also in the parish of Hope, adjoins
Fairfield, and it sometimes happens that one or both of the con-
tracting parties reside there and are married at Fairfield : the
entry is then sometimes comprehensively put as " both of the
parish of Hope " — Fairfield and Fernilee being both in Hope.
Fairfield, too, is sometimes called a parish. It would seem, there-
fore, that some of the parties may not be actually resident in the
township of Fairfield, and especially that searches for the mar-
riages of Fernilee residents should be made both at Hope and
Fairfield.

and are now printed under the supervision and with the permission
of the Rev. Joseph Eayrs, Vicar of Fairfield.
