Marriages at Buxton,
1718 to 1837.
Note. — Buxton was a chapelry in the great parish of Bakewell, but
has an independent Marriage Register from the year 1718.
The first Register comprises 13 leaves of parchment, un-
bound, and fastened together by wire. It contains entries of
baptisms, marriages, and burials indiscriminately from 1718 to
1 75 1, and of baptisms and burials from 1751 to 1766. The re-
verse is headed " Marriages at Buxton," and contains marriages
from 1756 to 1771.
The second Register is of parchment, bound in folio, and is
headed " Buxton, Derbyshire. Baptisms, 1 767-181 2. Burials,
1 767- 1 785." Many parchment leaves have been cut out, but only
in the unused portion of the book, and this was probably done so
that the first loose Register might be inserted for better custody.
The third volume is a folio of paper leaves, containing Marriages
1786-1812, Births and Christenings 1786-1803, and Burials 1787-
181 2. The portion for Marriages contains 27 used pages, with
four entries on a page, on printed forms.
Volume IV. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
These abstracts have been made by Mr. G. D. Goodman,
and are now printed under his supervision by permission of the
Rev. Canon C. E. Scott-Moncrieff, D.D., Vicar of Buxton.

Marriages at Repton,
1578 to 1837.
Notes. — Volume I. (1578 to 1629). — This is the oldest register of Bap-
tisms, Marriages, and Burials of the parish of Repton and the
chapelries of Ingleby, Foremark, and Bretby, also the hamlets of
Milton and Southwood, and extends from the time of Queen
Elizabeth to that of King Charles I. It is a small folio of parch-
ment, I3in. by 6in., and contains 45 leaves stitched in a very
dilapidated and torn parchment cover. Some of the leaves are
loose, and are very stained and worn. The writing in many
places is of an exceedingly good character, but so faint that it is
frequently quite illegible. The entries are mixed and written in
English, with the exception of a few Christian names in Latin.
The volume is divided into two portions, the first 33 leaves being
presumably the entries for Repton parish. There is no heading
to the first page, the first five leaves being loose, neither is any
year recorded till about the end of the first page, when the date
1580 is given ; but by tracing the months backwards it would
appear to have commenced in 1578. It is presumable, therefore,
that the register began at an earlier date than this, and leaves
have been lost. There is also a hiatus between the present pages 8
and 9, as there are no entries recorded after 1585 until 1591, and
therefore it is likely that some more leaves have been lost. The
register is very irregularly kept between 161 7 and 1628. The
second portion commences on the 67th page, and is headed, " Here
foUoweth the Register for Ingleby, Fornemark and Bretbye."
Throughout the register are marginal notes referring to the various
villages from whence the parties came, which have been recorded
in this transcript. In some cases it has been difficult to know to
which entry the note referred, and in the cases of Marriages whether
it referred to both parties or only one. Both portions of the
register down to 1602 are not original, but only transcripts, and it
is interesting to note that the first portion includes many references
to persons from Ingleby, etc., whilst in the second portion many
Repton families are entered, e.g., the schoolmasters, etc. ; yet
both registers commence about the same period.
Volume II. (1629 to 1655) is a coverless register of 18 leaves.
9in. by 5in., on parchment. The first page had only a few scat-
tered readings on it, and some of the pages are very discoloured.
io6 Derbyshire Parish Registers,
The entries are mixed down to the year 1648, when the register
commences with Christenings, followed by Burials, and again by
Christenings. It will be noticed that after 1647 there are no
Marriages recorded in this volume, and the gap is continued in
the next volume until 1659. The writing on the whole is good.
The leaves in two places in this register have been wrongly stitched
together at some time, viz., pages 7 and 8, which are really pages
9 and 10 ; whilst pages 33 and 34 are pages 36 and 35 in the original.
In this transcript they are given in chronological order. The two
last leaves have been torn across, but this does not prevent the
writing from being decipherable.
Volume III. (1655 to 1670) is on parchment, and consists
of 26 leaves, size 11 ^in. by 5^in., bound in thin parchment cover.
The entries are kept separately, and they are arranged as follows :
Baptisms, 1655 to 1668 ; Marriages, 1659 to 1669 ; Burials, 1655
to 1670 ; Baptisms, 1668 to 1670 ; Collections. Some of the
pages are loose, and a number have been cut out, perhaps because
they were blank, as no entries appear to be missing. The register
on the whole is well kept, and the writing very clear and good,
though some of the pages are very discoloured and the writing
faint.
A complete transcript of the whole of the above three volumes,
1578 to 1670, was made by Mr. Simpson and privately printed in
1913-
Volume IV. (1665-1812) is a long folio volume, 2iin. by
8 Jin., and is loosely stitched in boards covered with vellum, in a
very wrinkled and dilapidated condition, many of the leaves
being loose and much damaged, the edges being frayed both at
the sides and bottom. It consists of 80 leaves, 42 of which are
occupied by Baptisms from 1665 to 1810 ; four leaves with Mar-
riages, 1670 to 1753 ; and thirty-four with Burials, 1671 to 1812.
The writing in the early portion is beautifully neat, but very
small, and the lines close together, in some pages there being
between 80 and 90 entries ; later on the writing is very scrawlly,
larger, and indifferent. Many entries are crossed through.
The Burials are entered at the reverse end of the volume. The
first page is very faint, and the last one is torn, and only about
one-third of it left. It contains a clause of the will of the Rev.
