PREFACE
The fourth volume of the Marriage Registers of Norfolk
is now placed in the hands of the subscribers.
Of the nine Registers included, six date from the
sixteenth century, the remaining three belong to the
succeeding century.
As before, entries are reduced to a common form, and
the following contractions have been freely used : —
w.=widower, or widow. p.=ot the parish ol.
s.=spinster, single woman. co.=in the county of.
b.=bachelor, or single man. dioc.=in the diocese of.
d.=daughter of. /«V.=marriage licence.
For the transcription of the Registers, the Editors have
to acknowledge the valuable assistance of Dr. W. T. Bensley,
the Rev. E. Kinaston, the Rev. R. A. Oram, the Rev. J. G.
Poole, and the Rev. R. Fetzer Taylor and Miss Fetzer
Taylor, who contributed two Registers, Hickling was tran-
scribed by Mr. Johnson.
Thanks are due to the clergy who have given permission
for these records to be printed. Their names are mentioned
under the respective parishes. J_0 / 9 1.3l
It is of the highest importance that we should not delay
in printing the Registers as rapidly as possibly, as this is the
only way in which their contents can be effectively preserved.
Greater care undoubtedly is taken of these invaluable personal
records than was formerly the case, but loss of Registers still
goes on, and it may be mentioned that in more than one
instance Registers have been lost, or their condition has
seriously deteriorated, since they were transcribed, although it
is but ten years since this series of printed Parish Registers
was commenced.
It may be well to remind the reader that these printed
abstracts of the Registers are not legal "evidence". For
certificates, application must be made to the local clergy.
VI
The Editors will gladly welcome help in the work of
transcribing the Registers of Norfolk. It is only by volunteer
assistance that it becomes feasible to issue this series of
Parish Registers. And subscribers will greatly aid if they
will take every opportunity of making known the existence of
this series, for with sufficient support it should be possible, as
in other counties, to issue two volumes yearly. With so
large a county as Norfolk, it is obvious that adequate progress
in printing the Registers can be made so long only as that
rate, at the least, is steadily maintained.

Marriages at Barton Turf,
1558 to 1837.
Note.— Barton Turf is an ancient parish, and the Parish Church is at
least five hundred years old, and there are evidences of earlier
buildings on the same site.
Volume I. This consists of 92 parchment leaves, the leaves are
numbered and have two pages to each leaf. Leaves i to 40
contain Baptisms from 1560 to 1770; 41 to 52, Marriages from
1558 to 1753; 53 to 60, Baptisms from 1770 to 1790; 61 to 86.
Burials from 1558 to 1790. The rest of the book is blank, except
the last page, which contains an account of the Church Rate for
1671. At the end of this there is a statement of the clerk's fees,
amongst which are : " For buryall with a coffin, 2s. 6d. ; without
a coffin, \s. dd. The condition of this volume is generally good ;
size, 12 in. by 5 in. ; binding, stiif cardboards covered with parch-
ment. Of the part relating to Marriages, the latter part of leaf 45
is blank, date 1645-66, in which period there is only one entry.
There are blank spaces also on leaf 47. Where the name of the
parish is not given. Barton Turf is to be understood.
The Register begins with the words: — "Register Bocke for the
Towne of Barton then made and [ ] according to the
Cannons and ecclesiasticall constitutions published and set forth
by the Archbishop, Bishops, and the rest of the clergie of the
province of Canterberye in the Sinnod begune at London the
20 daye of the munth of October in the yeare of our Lord God
1597 and in the Rayne of our most Cristiane Princis Ladye
Elizabeth by the grace of God of England, France, and lerland,
Defendris of the fayth, &c., the thirtyenynth." It is signed :
"Per me E. Greene."
" Note that everye yeare begines the 25 daye of Marche." The name
of Esdras Greene occurs in the Marriage Register, Jime 26, 1597.
From i6io to 1730 the handwriting varies a great deal and in places
it is bad and difficult to read.
Probably only the first four leaves of this book were written by E.
Greene. They contain the copy of the original Baptismal
Registers, 1558 to 1594. The copying of the Registers of
Marriages and Burials, and all the other entries up to 1610 are by
another hand, presumably that of Edmund Cooke, the Vicar, who
was buried May 30th, 1610.

Volume II contains Marriages from 1754 to 1812. Only about the
first quarter of the book, to p. 52, is used for Marriages. The
greater part is blank, and the rest contains Banns, 1754 to 1884.
The handwriting is generally good. The covers are bound in
leather, but much worn ; size, io| in. by 8 in.
Volume III contains Marriages from 1812 to 1837. Only the first
25 pages of this book are used, the remainder are blank. It has
a parchment cover, size is|in. by 10 in.
These extracts have been made by the Rev. J. G. Poole, of Barton
Turf, and are now printed under his supervision after collation
with the Register.
