PREFACE.



The seven parishes comprised in this volume cover
that narrow strip of Nottinghamshire lying north of Newark
and east of the River Trent. They form the northern
part of Newark Wapentake, the district dealt with by
Dr. E. G. Wake in his History of Collingham and the Northern
Half of the Hundred of Newark, published in 1868.

The whole of the Marriage Registers in Newark Wapen-
take — twenty-six in number — have now been printed in this
series, the other parishes appearing in Volumes III., IV.
and XV. 13792ii0

The Editors wish to thank the various incumbents, whose
names are mentioned under their respective parishes, for
permission to print these abstracts. Thanks are also due
to Canon R. E. G, Cole, of Lincoln, for assistance in
checking and in other ways.

The same contractions are used as in the earlier volumes

of the series.

It should be remembered that previous to 1752 the year
was calculated as beginning on the 25th of March, instead
of the I St of January, so that a marriage taking place on,
say 20th February, 1625, would be on that date in 1626
according to our reckoning ; but, as the civil and ecclesi-
astical year were both used, this is sometimes expressed
by 2oth Feb., 162 1.



VI.

Ill all cases where the marriage is stated to have taken
place by Licence that fact is recorded, as the searcher
thereby knows that further information as to the age,
parentage, and vocation of the parties is probably recover-
able from the Allegations in the Archdeaconry or other
office from which the Licence was issued.

It might be wise to remind the reader that these printed
abstracts of the Registers are not legal " evidence." For
certificates application must be made to the local clergy.

1558 to 1837.



Note — The first volume of S. Collingham Registers consists of 69 parch-
ment leaves measuring 16J by Si inches and contains entries for the
years 1558-1702,

There is no register for the period 1703-1722. The second volume
has 14 leaves and contains entries of Marriages from 1723 to 1753, and
of Baptisms and Burials from 1722 to 1765. The third volume is a
folio in rough calf containing Marriages from 1754 to 1812.

Vol. IV. contains Marriages 1813-37.

These Marriages have been copied by Mr. T. M. Blagg, F.S.A.,
by permission of the Rev. G. W. Fosbery, the late rector of S.
Collingham, and are now printed by permission of the Rev. A. J.
Maxwell, the present rector, after having been completed for the
period 1812-37 by the Rev. C. W. H. Aitchison, Vicar of Langford.
