however, we realize that difficulties will sometimes occur despite all of
our efforts to avoid them. On page one of this directory are shown the
numbers which should be called to place long distance calls, for numbers
not listed in the directory, to report service difficulties and in cases of
emergencies. Other matters, including all business transactions, should
be taken up with the Business Office either by telephone, personal visit
or letter.

Service Applications, Changes and Discontinuances

Applications for new service, changes in or additions to existing service or equip-
ment, and discontinuance of service should be handled with our business office, by
calling Bessemer 9000, by mail or in person. Ample notice will help us to make
the desired installation or change in your service on the day you wish. If it is
not convenient for you to visit our business office, a telephone call will enable you,
in almost every case, to transact business promptly and satisfactorily.

Bills and Payments
Bills are rendered on the 16th of each month and include local service charges in
advance for a one month period from date of bill and long distance service for a
one month period preceding the date of the bill. Bills may be paid by mail or in
person at our business office, which is located at 1817 4th Ave., Bessemer, Alabama.

in Placing Out-of-Town Calls

Station-to-Sfation Calls
(From One Telephone to Another)
A station-to-station call is one on which you ask
to be connected with a certain telephone in some
distant place, but not with a particular person
at that telephone.
A call filed for a private branch exchange exten-
sion telephone or a hotel room takes the person-
to-person classification.
To place a station-to-station call, give the operator
First — The name of the place you are calling.
Second — The Telephone number you are calling
(if known), otherwise, the name and address of
the called telephone. For example: John Doe's
Residence — 425 Main Street.
Third — ^Your own number when the operatoiO
asks for it.
The initial period is three minutes when the rate
is more than 25c, after which charges for addi-
tional time apply. The initial period is five min-
utes when the rate is 25c or less, after which
charges for additional time apply,
Features of
Station-to-Station Calls
1. The rate on a station-to-station call is less than
on a person-to-person call.
2. It is completed more quickly.
8. Station-to-station calls, other than collect calls,
are not subject to a report charge.
4. The rate is further reduced every night from
7:00 P. M. to 4:30 A. M., and all day Sunday,
if the initial day station-to-station rate exceeds
35 cents. The time of day at the originating
point when conversation starts determines
whether the day or night rate applies.
5. Charges begin when the called telephone is
answered, provided the calling party is holding
the line.
6. Charges may be reversed without any change
in rate when the rate is 25 cents or more. A
slight additional charge is made when the
initial rate is less than 25 cents.
Person-to-Person Calls
(From One Person to Another)
A person-to-person call is one on which you de-
sire to talk to a particular person, a private
branch exchange extension telephone, or a hotel
room. While the rate on a person-to-person call
is higher than the rate on a station-to-station call,
the rate on a person-to-person call is reduced
every night from 7:00 P. M. to 4:30 A. M. and
all day Sunday if the initial day rate exceeds 50
cents.
To place a person-to-person call, give the operator
First — The name of the place you are calling.
Second — The name and telephone number of the
person you are calling. If you do not know the
number of the telephone, give the name and ad-
dress under which it is listed. Example: Mr.
John Doe at 2470 or Mr. John Doe at John Doe's
residence — 425 Main Street.
Third — Your own number when the operator
asks for it.
The initial period is three minutes, after which
charges for additional time apply.
If the called telephone is reached but the call can-
not be completed because the person desired is
not available and cannot be reached elsewhere, a
nominal report charge is made to compensate
the Telephone Company for the work done on the
call.
Collect Calls
If the charges on the call you are placing are to be
paid at the distant telephone, you should tell the
operator when filing the call that it is a "collect"
call. The charges, if accepted at the distant tele-
phone, will be billed to that telephone. If the
charges are not accepted at the distant telephone
and the call is not completed you will be billed
with the report charge.

You can save money by using station-to-
station service between 4:30 A. M. and
7:00 P.M.
A further saving can be made by using
either station-to-station or person-to-per-
son service between 7:00 P. M. and 4:30
A. M. and all day Sunday when the initial
day station-to-station rate exceeds 35c or
the initial day person-to-person rate ex-
ceeds 50c. These low rates also apply all
day Christmas and New Year's.
These reduced rate periods make long dis-
tance more economical to you in conducting
business and social affairs.

Birmingham subscribers wishing to reach Bessemer subscribers should consult the directory, and after securing the correct number, dial "Operator."
When the operator answers, give her your own telephone number and the Bessemer number desired.

numbers which should be called to place long distance calls, for numbers
not listed in the directory, to report service difficulties and in cases of

Applications for new service, changes in or additions to existing service or equip-
ment, and discontinuance of service should be handled with our business office, by
calling Bessemer 9000, by mail or in person. Ample notice will help us to make
the desired installation or change in your service on the day you wish. If it is
not convenient for you to visit our business office, a telephone call will enable you,
in almost every case, to transact business promptly and satisfactorily.

Bills and Payments
Bills are rendered on the 16th of each month and include local service charges in
advance for a one month period from date of bill and long distance service for a
one month period preceding the date of the bill. Bills may be paid by mail or in
person at our business office, which is located at 1817 4th Ave., Bessemer, Alabama.

in Placing Out-of-Town Calls

Station-to-Sfation Calls
(From One Telephone to Another)
A station-to-station call is one on which you ask
to be connected with a certain telephone in some
distant place, but not with a particular person
at that telephone.
A call filed for a private branch exchange exten-
sion telephone or a hotel room takes the person-
to-person classification.
To place a station-to-station call, give the operator
First — The name of the place you are calling.
Second — The Telephone number you are calling
(if known), otherwise, the name and address of
the called telephone. For example: John Doe's
Residence — 425 Main Street.
Third — ^Your own number when the operatoiO
asks for it.
The initial period is three minutes when the rate
is more than 25c, after which charges for addi-
tional time apply. The initial period is five min-
utes when the rate is 25c or less, after which
charges for additional time apply,
Features of
Station-to-Station Calls
1. The rate on a station-to-station call is less than
on a person-to-person call.
2. It is completed more quickly.
8. Station-to-station calls, other than collect calls,
are not subject to a report charge.
4. The rate is further reduced every night from
7:00 P. M. to 4:30 A. M., and all day Sunday,
if the initial day station-to-station rate exceeds
35 cents. The time of day at the originating
point when conversation starts determines
whether the day or night rate applies.
5. Charges begin when the called telephone is
answered, provided the calling party is holding
the line.
6. Charges may be reversed without any change
in rate when the rate is 25 cents or more. A
slight additional charge is made when the
initial rate is less than 25 cents.
Person-to-Person Calls
(From One Person to Another)
A person-to-person call is one on which you de-
sire to talk to a particular person, a private
branch exchange extension telephone, or a hotel
room. While the rate on a person-to-person call
is higher than the rate on a station-to-station call,
the rate on a person-to-person call is reduced
every night from 7:00 P. M. to 4:30 A. M. and
all day Sunday if the initial day rate exceeds 50
cents.
To place a person-to-person call, give the operator
First — The name of the place you are calling.
Second — The name and telephone number of the
person you are calling. If you do not know the
number of the telephone, give the name and ad-
dress under which it is listed. Example: Mr.

If the called telephone is reached but the call can-
not be completed because the person desired is
not available and cannot be reached elsewhere, a
nominal report charge is made to compensate
the Telephone Company for the work done on the

Collect Calls
If the charges on the call you are placing are to be
paid at the distant telephone, you should tell the
operator when filing the call that it is a "collect"
call. The charges, if accepted at the distant tele-
phone, will be billed to that telephone. If the
charges are not accepted at the distant telephone
and the call is not completed you will be billed
with the report charge.

station service between 4:30 A. M. and
7:00 P.M.
A further saving can be made by using
either station-to-station or person-to-per-
son service between 7:00 P. M. and 4:30
A. M. and all day Sunday when the initial
day station-to-station rate exceeds 35c or
the initial day person-to-person rate ex-
ceeds 50c. These low rates also apply all
day Christmas and New Year's.
These reduced rate periods make long dis-
tance more economical to you in conducting
business and social affairs.
