HOW TO USE THE DIAL TELEPHONE

Wait until you hear the dial tone before you
dial. (If the number you wont is not in this
directory, dial 113 and ask for information.)

Dial the listed number.

Ringing Signal

A soft "burr-r-ring" repeated at regular intervals
means that the telephone you dialed is ringing. Give
your party time to answer— about 10 rings— before
you hang up.

f^.A^ 1 7 1965

TO DIAL ANOTHER PARTY ON
YOUR LINE IN ATMORE

If you are a party line subscriber and wish
to dial another party on your line, it will be
necessary to dial 119 followed by the listed
number of the person you wish to call.

After you have finished dialing 119 plus the
listed number, hang up your receiver. Wait
for approximately 10 seconds to give the other
party a. chance to answer, and then pick up
your telephone again and talk to the party you
have called.

If you dial the directory number only of
other parties on your line, you will get a busy
signal. Therefore if you keep getting busy
signals when calling a nearby telephone, it may
indicate they are on your line. In order to
verify whether or not another telephone is on
the same line as yours, you should call Repair
Service number 114, and inquire whether your
number and the number you are calling are on
the same line.

The Busy Signal

A steady "buzz-buzz-buzz" sound means the line
you called is in use. Hang up and call again later.

Letter "©"-Numeral "0"

Please be careful not to confuse the letter "O" with
the numeral "0" when dialing.

TO DIAL ANOTHER PARTY ON
YOUR LINE IN WALNUT HILL

If you are a party line subscriber and wish
to dial another party on your line, it will be
necessary to dial a special code number, instead
of the regular telephone number listed in the
directory.

If you dial the Directory number of other
parties who are on your line, you will get a
busy signal. Therefore, if you keep getting a
busy signal when calling a nearby telephone,
it may indicate that they are on your line. You
should then consult the card which the Tele-
phone Company will furnish you in order to
determine the special code number of the party
you wish to call; or dial Repair Service 6114.
They will be able to tell you whether or not the
party you are calling is on your line, and if so,
the special code number you must dial.

After you have finished dialing the code
number, hang up your receiver. Your bell,
as well as the bell of the party you are calling,
will both ring at intervals. When the dialed
party answers, your bell will stop ringing. You
should then again lift the receiver and talk to
the party you have called.

If the called party does not answer within 2
to 4 minutes, the ringing will automatically
stop.

HOW TO MAKE A LONG DISTANCE CALL

■ Dial "Operator" and give her the area code
(or city) and telephone number you are calling.

If you do not know the number, tell the Operator
the name and address of the person you are
calling. Tell her also whether it is a station
or person call.

FOR FASTER SERVICE ON LONG DISTANCE CALLS. USE AREA CODES

The United States and Canada are divided into nnore than 100 telephone areas, each
identified by a three-digit area code. (See map on page 3.) Use area codes to call
from one telephone area to another, when the number you are calling has two letters
and five numerals or seven numerals. It is not necessary to use area codes when
calling another telephone within the same telephone area.

Use of the area code will help you get your Long
Distance call through faster. Here's how: when you
say "Area code 311, 655-2368," for example, the

operator is able to dial the number and your call is
immediately on its way. No need to wait while she
looks up the area code . . . you save valuable time.

This mop shows telephone areas
and area codes in the United
States and Canada. Since some
localities cannot yet be called by
using area codes, ask the operator
for the area code of the place you
are calling.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Atmore, Ala.

1. YOUR TELEPHONE SERVICE

Our aim is to render telephone service that
is satisfactory to our customers. However,
difficulties will at times occur despite all our
efforts to avoid them. Please report all diffi-
culties promptly to repair service, Tel. No.
114, and we will try to clear the trouble as
quickly as possible.

2. BUSINESS OFFICE LOCATION
AND HOURS

The business office is located at 201 S. Pensa-
cola Ave., Atmore, Alabama.

Business hours: 8 A.M. to 4 P.M., except
Thursday and Saturday when the hours are
8 A.M. to 12 Noon.

3. APPLICATIONS FOR SERVICE,
FOR MOVES AND
DISCONTINUANCES

When applying for service, please visit the
business office.

When you want your phone moved, changed
or discontinued, simply call the business office
and tell them what you want.

When discontinuing your service, you must
NOTIFY THE TELEPHONE COMPANY.
Otherwise, you will still be responsible for pay-
ing the charges accruing against that telephone.
Atmore, Ala.

3

4. PAYMENT OF BILLS

Telephone bills are rendered on the first of
each month. Charges for local exchange serv-
ice are for one month from the date of the bill.
For example, on bill rendered on January 1, the
rental is for the month of January. Long
distance "toll" charges are itemized on a
separate statement. All charges are payable
on demand or upon receipt of the bill.

Bills should be paid not later than the 10th
of each month. Your credit rating, as deter-
mined by the telephone company and reported
to others, depends upon the promptness with
which you pay your bills. Keep your credit
good by paying your bills promptly.

When you do not pay promptly, your service
is subject to discontinuance. When service is
discontinued, there is a $1.50 charge for re-
connection. If the instrument has been re-
moved, the charge for reinstallation is $3.00.

5. PAYING BILLS WHEN OFFICE
IS CLOSED

When the office is closed, you may pay tele-
phone bills by using the night depository.
Simply follow instructions on the envelopes
provided there.

6. TELEPHONE CONVERSATION
RECORDING DEVICES

A short "beep" tone heard every 10 to 15
seconds indicates that your conversation is
being recorded by an electrical recorder con-
nected to the line. If you do not want your
conversation recorded, tell the person to whom
you are talking to disconnect his recording
machine, and when he disconnects the recorder,
the "beep" tone will stop.

The use of a recorder without the "beep"
tone attachment is unlawful.

7. PROVIDE FOR CONCEALED
TELEPHONE WIRES

When you are building or remodeling, be
sure that your architect or contractor makes
provision for concealed telephone wires. Get
in touch with the telephone company before
you start to build so that we can advise you as
to the best and cheapest manner to make such
provision.

8. BUSINESS AND RESIDENCE RATES

Service subject to the business rate may be
determined by the location of the telephone in-
strument or, the primary use made of the serv-
ice. The business rate will apply when the
telephone is located on premises primarily and
essentially used for business purposes, such as
offices, stores, shops, factories, and garages.
The business rate may also apply to telephones
located in domestic establishments when the
service is used substantially for, or advertised
for business purposes. Telephones located in
residences and used primarily for domestic
purposes are entitled to the rate for residence
service. If, however, such service is used sub-
stantially for, or advertised for, business pur-
poses, the business rate will be applied.

9. ERRORS IN DIRECTORY LISTINGS

The Telephone Company assumes no liabil-
ity, whatever, for damages arising from errors
or omissions in the making up, or printing, of
this book. The utmost care is used, however,
in listing all subscribers correctly.

No binder, holder, or other cover, except
those furnished or approved by the Telephone
Company, shall be used in connection with any
telephone directory.

10. USE OF SERVICE AND FACILITIES

All facilities shall be furnished by and owned
by the telephone company, and the company
shall have the right to enter the subscriber's
premises for the purpose of inspection, repair-
ing, or removing such facilities, except that
switched lines and telephones are owned and
maintained by the subscriber.

The connection of unauthorized attachments
to, or tampering with the line or telephone by
the subscriber, will subject the service of that
subscriber to immediate disconnection or re-
moval.

Telephone Service is only for the use of the
subscriber, his family, and, in the case of a

business telephone, his employees and business
associates. Normal use of the telephone by
house guests, occasional business visitors and
like persons is considered to be proper, but
abnormal use, such as one telephone by two
or more families, the customers of a business
house, the patrons of a hotel, and like instances,
is not considered to be within the rates charged,
and such abnormal use will entitle the com-
pany to disconnect, or remove the telephone,
or to demand the installation of the proper type
of service to meet the situation, such as pay
stations, additional listings, joint users, chang-
ing the location of the telephone, etc.

The subscriber shall be responsible for rea-
sonable care of the telephone and other fa-
cilities attached to his premises. He shall be
responsible for all charges accruing to his tele-
phone, regardless, specifically in the case of
long distance, of whether he personally placed
the call or accepted the charges. Such sub-
scriber responsibility shall continue until the
service is terminated in accordance with
"Termination of Service" below.

Party line customers shall be entitled to rea-
sonable use of the line. If the number or dura-
tion of conversations by any one party is of
such magnitude that the reasonable use of the
line by others is interfered with, the company
reserves the right to discontinue the service,
or where possible, to demand that the sub-
scriber take a higher grade of service.

The subscriber has no property or other
rights in the telephone number, and the com-
pany reserves the right to change the number
whenever it is desirable to do so.

When the use by any customer of his service
is such that there is unreasonable interference
with other parties on his line, with the opera-
tors, or with other telephone subscribers, the
company reserves the right to discontinue the
service. Such unreasonable interference
would include refusal to abide by the rules and
regulations set forth; the allowing of babies
and small children to play with the telephone,
the placing of calls impossible of completion,
habitual use by intoxicated persons, the use of
the telephone or line for purposes other than
regular telephone communications, and similar
other examples.

Profane or indecent language by a subscriber
will be considered unreasonable interference,
and should the offense be grave or habitual
enough to interfere with the operators, or other
telephone users, the company reserves the right
to discontinue the service.

Termination of service shall be in accordance
with the above rules and regulations, by the
Telephone Company for cause, or on order of
the subscriber. In addition, service may be
terminated at the option of the Telephone Com-
pany in case of non-payment of bills. The sub-
scriber shall be responsible for all charges ac-
cruing to his telephone until service is discon-
tinued in accordance with this paragraph.
