Not a Help to Transmission
Carelessness on the port of persons using the Telephone is often responsible
for the complaints of poor transmission. Without thinking, they speak over,
under and on both sides of the mouthpiece, instead of directly into it.
One method of bringing this bod habit to the attention of telephone users
is to tell them that removing the lips from the normal position in front of the
transmitter has the same effect as lengthening the line in use as follows:
One inch lengthens the line 57 miles.
Two inches lengthens the line 128 miles.
Three inches lengthens the line 179 miles.
Four inches lengthens the line 218 miles.
FIRE!
Please refrain from calling the operator for fire information when the fire
alarm is blown, as this causes serious congestion and delays important mes-
sages.

How To Place Out-of-Town Calls
Station'tO'Station and Person-to-Person Sen/ices are Explained
below for your convenience in placing out-of-town calls:
STATION-TO-STATION
CALLS
PERSON-TO-PERSON
CALLS
(From One Telephone to Another) (From One Person To Another)
A Statlon-to-Station call is one on
which you ask to be connected with
a certain telephone in sonne distant
place, but not with a particular per-
son at that telephone.
A call filed for a private branch ex-
change extension telephone or a hotel
roonn takes the person-to-person clas-
sification.
To place a Station-to-Stotion Coll,
give the operator —
FIRST — The name of the place you
are calling.
SECOND — The telephone number
you are calling (it known) other-
wise, the name and address of the
call telephone, for example, John
Doe's residence — 425 Main Street.
THIRD — Your number, when the op-
erator asks for it.
COLLECT CALLS
If the charges on the call you are
placing ore to be paid at the distant
telephone, you should tell the opera-
tor when filing the call that it is a
"collect" coll. The charges, if ac-
cepted at the distant telephone, will
be billed to that telephone.
For further information regarding
classes of service and rates — call
"Long Distance."
A Person-to-Person call is one on
which you desire to talk to a particu-
lar person, a private branch exchange
extension telephone or a hotel room.
While the rate on a Person-to-Person
call is higher than the rate on a
Station-to-Station call, the rote on a
Person-to-Person call is reduced every
night from 6:00 p. m. to 4:30 a. m.
and all day Sunday, if the initial day
rate exceeds 50 cents.
To place a Person-to-Person Call
give the operator:
FIRST — The name of the place you
are calling.
SECOND — The name and telephone
number of the person you are call-
ing. If you do not know the number
of the telephone, give the name
and address under which it is listed.
Example: Mr. John Doe, at 2470 or
Mr. John Doe at John Doe's resi-
dence — 245 Main Street.
THIRD — Your own number, when op-
erator asks for it.
FEATURES OF STATION-TO
STATION CALLS:
1. The rate on a Station-to-Station
Coll is less than the rate on a
Person-to-Person Call.
2. It is completed more quickly.
HOW TO USE THE DIAL TELEPHONE IN
AUCEVILLE, CARROLLTON, & GORDO,
ALABAMA
THE DIAL
The dial has ten openings and ten figuresr
I. 2. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. 8, 9 and 0. One figure
is associated with each dial opening.
WAIT FOR DIAL TONE
Remove the receiver from the hook and
listen for the dial tone which is a stead/
humming sound indicating that the line is
ready for you to dial. If you do not hear the
dial tone within a reasonable length of time,
hang up, wait a few seconds and try again.
HOW TO DIAL A NUMBER
When you hear the dial tone, dial each
figure in the telephone number. For ex-
ample, to call 2499, place your finger in thg
dial opening associated with the figure 2,
turn the dial around until your finger strikes
the finger stop, then remove your finger and
without touching the dial, allow it to return
to its normal position. Proceed in the same
way to dial the figures 4, 9 and 9. If your
finger slips or you make a mistake, hang up
the receiver, wait a few seconds for the dial
tone and dial again.
Before dialing a second coll, always hang
up the receiver for a few seconds to clear
the previous connection.
RINGING AND BUSY SIGNALS
A few seconds after you hove completed
dialing, you should hear either the ringing
signal, an intermittent burr-rr-ing sound, in-
dicating that the bell of the called telephone
is ringing, or you should hear the busy signa'.
a buzz-buzz-buzz, indicating that the called
line is busy.
If the called telephone is busy, you should
hang up your receiver and try the call again
later.
If you do not hear either the ringing sig-
nal or the busy signal within half a minute,
hang up your receiver for a few seconds and
then try the coll again.
DIAL "OPERATOR" FOR ASSISTANCE
If at any time you wish further informa-
tion regarding the procedure to follow in
making calls of any kind dial "Operator"
and ask her for the information desired.
If you fail to hear the ringing signal or
busy signal after repeated attempts to reach
a number, or if you have any other difficulty
in completing a call, dial "Operator" and
report the condition to her.
COIN BOX TELEPHONES
Instructions for operating coin box tele-
phones are mounted on each coin box sta-
tion.
CALLS FROM A PARTY LINE OR FROM
A LINE WITH AN EXTENSION TELEPHONE
Listen to make sure that the line is not in
use. if you do not hear the dial tone, ask
if the line is being used. If no response is
received, hang up the receiver and then try
again.
However, if you hear successive clicks.
Indicating that someone is dialing, wait un-
til the dialing stops and then say that you
hove interfered with the call, tnat it will
be necessary to hang up and dial the com-
plete number again. Then replace your re-
ceiver on the hook.
If you hear another party on your line dur-
ing or after dialing, say that the line is in
use and request him to hang up his receiver.
If the other party comes in on the line while
you are dialing, after he hangs up. you
should also hang up for a few seconds and
then dial the complete number again.
TO DIAL ANOTHER PARTY ON
YOUR LINE
If you are a party line subscriber and
wish to call another party on your line, it
will be necessary to follow the instructions
given below.
After you have finished dialing the listed
telephone number, as shown in your direc-
tory you will then hear a busy tone, hang up
your receiver at once and allow 30 to 60 sec-
onds for the equipment to ring the called
number. Then remove your receiver from
the telephone and listen for the called party
to answer. If no answer, hang up your re-
ceiver and dial the desired number the
second time. If the called telephone still
does not answer, it would Indicate that no
one is in hearing distance to answer the
telephone,
RURAL SUBSCRIBERS
To reach another party on your line, dial
the regular number of the other party as
listed in the telephone directory, after you
have finished dialing, you will hear the
"busy" signal and should immediately hang
up your receiver, and proceed as described
under "General Instructions."
