How to Place Out-of-Town
Calls

There are two general classes of Out-of-Town Calls,
namely Station-to-Station and Person-to-Person, as
explained below.

Station-+o-Station Calls

(From One Telephone to Another)

A station-to-station call is one when you ask to be
connected with a certain telephone in a distant place.
However, if you ask for a particular person or for an
extension telephone reached through a private branch
exchange, as one in some department or hotel room,
the call is a person-to-person call. A station-to-sta-
tion call is completed more quickly and the rate is less
than for a person-to-person call.

The time at the originating point when the conversa-
tion starts determines whether the day or night rate
applies. Charges be^in when the called telephone is
answered provided the calling party is holding the line.

To Place a Sta+ion-fo-Sfation Call

First— Give the operator the name of the place you
are calling.

Second — The telephone number you are calling (if
known), otherwise, the name and the address (if
known) of the party whose telephone you are calling.
For example: J. W. Brown's Residence — 425 Main
Street.

Third — Tour telephone number when the operator
&9ka for it.

Per$on-fo-Person Calls

(From On€ Person to Another)

A person-to-person call is one when you ask for a
particular person or extension telephone reached
through a private branch exchange, as one in some
department or hotel room. The rate for a person-to-
person call is higher than the rate for a station-to-
station call.

The time at the originating point when the con-
versation starts determines whether the day or night
rate applies. The initial period is three minvites, after
which charges for additional time apply. Charges be-
gin when the called person or extension telephone
reached Uirough a private branch exchange is ob-
tained, provided the calling party is holding the line.
Charges may be reversed without any change in rate.

To Place a Per$on-to-Per$on Call

First — Give the operator the name of the place you
are calling.

Second — The name and the telephone number (if
known) of the person you are calling, otherwise, the
name and the address ( if known ) of the called party.
For example: Mr. J. W. Brown, at telephone 2470, or
Mr. J. W. Brown, at J. W. Brown's residence — 425
Main Street.

Third — Your telephone number when the operator asks
for it.

Charges lor InHial Period, Overtime and
Federal Taxes

Further information concerning charges for initial
period, overtime, and Federal taxes may be obtained
by calling Long Distance.

Collecf Calls

If the charges on the call are to be paid at the
distant telephone, you should tell the operator when
filing the call that it is a "collect" call. The charges.
if accepted at the distant telephone, will be billed to
that telephone.

General Information

Tariffs

Tariffs which show rates, rules and regulations for
telephone service and facilities are on file with the
Regulatory Commissions having jurisdiction over such
matters, and are available for public inspection at
our business office.

Transmitting Messages

Employes of the Telephone Company are forbidden
to accept oral or written messages to be transmitted by
an employe over the lines of the Telephone Company.

Attachments to Telephones

To render satisfactory service, it is important that
the Telephone Company own and maintain all ap-
paratus and equipment connected with its lines. Tele-
phone equipment is designed to furnish the best pos-
sible senice and the use of attachments, other than
those furnished by the Telephone Company, usually
impairs the efficiency of the service. The Telephone
Company does not sanction the use of any devices in
connection with its equipment except those furnished
by the Company.

Advertising Telephone Numbers

The advantages of showing telephone numbers on
stationei-y. signs, cards, etc., are recognized, through
the growth and changes in the city and the corre-
sponding growth and arrangement of telephone facili-
ties may require the changing of telephone numbers.
For this reason, stationery, sigms, cards, etc., showing
telephone numbers should not be printed in large
quantities.

Telegrams by Telephone

You may telephone telegrams, cablegrams or radio-
grams to the Western Union Telegraph Co., and have
the charges billed to your telephone account if you are
a telephone subscriber. Just follow the instructiona
shown under the listing of this company in the dire©-
tory.

Architects* and Builders' Service

T^'hen building or remodeling, you may arrange with
your architect or builder to provide telephone outlets
while construction is in progress. The Telephone Com-
pany will gladly advise with you, your architect or
builder. Just call the Telephone Company and ask
for "Architects' and Builders' Service."

Calls from a Party Line Where a Crank Is
Used to Ring the Operator

Before ringing the Operator, remove the receiver
and listen to make sure the line is not in use. To
get the Operator, replace the receiver and turn the
crank. When through talking, promptly hang up the
receiver and turn the crank again £0 the Opeiator
will clear your line for further use.

Telephone Directories

Ix)S8 of time and inconvenience by calling wrong
numbers can be avoided if you consult the current
directory before placing a call and avoid the use of
obsolete directories.

Between directory issues certain numbers .do not
appear in the current directory due to changes and
new installations. These numbers may be secured by
calling "Information."

No binder, holder or auxiliary cover, except those
furnished by the Company, shall be used in connection
with any telephone directory.

Telephone directories of other cities in this and
certain foreign countries can be obtained for our
customers who need them. Prices, etc., may be secured
by calling the business office.
