PREFACE

In compiling the "Genealogy of Some Descendants of Thomas
Fuller of Woburn," I have been greatly assisted by the work of
the late Elizabeth Abercrombie, whose volume is an authority on
the genealogy of the descendants of Joseph^ Fuller, No. 5 of my
First Group; by the work of the late Jesse Franklin Fuller, No. 85
of the Fourth Group; and that of the late Rev. Arthur Buck-
minster Fuller, No. 31 of the Eighth Group, and his daughter,
Edith Davenport Fuller.

I am also indebted to papers of the late Newton Fuller of New
London, descendant of Robert Fuller of Salem; to Mrs. C. W.
Everts of Nashville, Mich.; Watson Fuller of Atlanta, Ga. ; to the
late Thomas Hart Fuller of Washington, D. C. (See page 4)
for obituary notice; to Prof. S. W. Geiser of Fayette, la.; to War-
ren B. Fuller of Sioux Falls, S. D. ; to Charles M. Fuller of Spring-
field; and in a lesser degree to many others for information con-
cerning the descendants of Thomas Fuller of Woburn, and other
Fuller lines. ' As a result of this assistance and of my own re-
searches, the information about the descendants has been largely
increased especially in six of the ten Groups in which the descen-
dants of said Thomas Fuller have been arranged.

In the Supplements to Volumes I, II, III, there is much new
information, especially concerning families in the (ith, 10th and
11th Groups in the Edward Fuller line; the 4th Group in the Cap-
tain Matthew Fuller line; and the 8th and 11th Groups in the John
of Ipswich line.

The Fuller Coat of Arms, previously shown in black in Volume
I (now about out of print), is shown in the present volume in
color.

It is hoped this work will meet with the approval of all
concerned.

Wm. H. FULLER.
Palmer, July 8. 1!)1'.).

Thomas Hart Fuller, descendant of John Fuller of Ipswich
(see pages 240 and 244, Volume 3, Fuller Genealogy), who died
Sunda\', June 8, 1919, in Washington, D. C, was, through his work
among the U. S. Records and in the Congressional Library, my
most valued correspondent.

His research work, like that of the late Newton Fuller, con-
cerned the ten ancestral lines of Fullers.

Thomas Hart Fuller was born in Lisbon, Conn., Feb. 22, 1840;
graduated from Yale College in 1863; spent a year in Paris, and
traveled in Europe, Egypt and Palestine. Later he taught school
some 20 j^ears ; then he entered the U. S. Postal service, where he
had been Post Oflfice Inspector 15 years. The genealogical re-
searches were made in leisure hours and were shared by his
!:)rother. Luther Fuller, who lives in Washington. In one of
Thomas Hart Fuller's numerous letters, written about 1915 just
after the publication of Volume 3, he stated that he "thanked God
he had lived to see that book."

I had hoped he would be pleased to welcome Volume 4.

Wm. H. FULLER.

AMERICAN FULLER GENEALOGY

LINE OF THOMAS FULLER OF WOBURN

First (Jeneration

Thomas^ Fuller, who came to America from England in 163S
and settled in Woburn, died in Salem in June, 1698, aged 80 years
and 2 months.

He married 1st, June i:!, ICA'.i, Elizabeth Tidd, dau. of John
Tidd of Woburn, and 2d, Aug. 25, 1684, Sarah (Nutt) Wyman, who
died May 24, 1688.

His .'Sd wife was Harriet (Pamer) Wilson; date of marriage,
and of her death not found.

Woburn, incorporated Sept. 27, 1642, was previously a part of
Charlestown. According to Sewall's History of Woburn, Thomas
l'"uller was a subscriber to the Town Orders of Wol)urn, drawn uj)
in Charlestown, in December, 1()40. He was a Idacksmith, and had
meadow land granted him in 1648, and also, '4 poles square of
swamp ne.xt to his shop."

He bore the title of "sargeant" in !().")(), and of lieutenant in
168.5. He was Selectman in the years 166;!, 16()4 and KiS.").

His wife Elizabeth dying, he appears to have removed to
Salem about 1664; to have returned in 1684; married his second
wife, and alter her death returned to Salem and married his od
wife, who survived him and came to Woburn, to live with her
married daughters.

According to Stiles' History Essex County, Thomas Fuller
purchased in 1663, some 300 acres in that part of Salem now
known as Middleton, (incorporated in 1728), and erected a dwell-
ing house there, and had a blacksmith shop.

He made his will June 9, 1698, and it was probated in Salem,
July 4, 1698. The legatees were sons Thomas, Benjamin, Jacob;
daughters "Dean," Ruth Wilkins and her daughter, Deborah Shaw,
and her two sons and three daughters — Ruth Wheeler, grandson
David Richardson, and grand-daughters, Bethiah Fuller, and Ruth
Wheeler — with son Jacob Fuller as Executor,
