THIS Table shows the breadths which make an acre, of any field
or piece of land of a rectangular figure, from 6 inches to 2200
yards in length ; the lengths rising by inches to 36 inches, then
by 6 inches to 12 feet or 4 yards, thence by yards to 500, and
thence by 100 yards to 2200 yards. Tn the first column on the
left headed length, are to be found the various lengths rising in
succession ; and in the adjoining columns headed breadth, opposite
each several length, stands the breadth, or width, which makes
an acre, in yards, feet, and inches.

EXAMPLE. In a rectangular field, the length of whose side is
345 yards, what breadth is required to make an acre ?

Look in the column headed length, for 345 yards, opposite
which, in the column adjoining headed breadth, stands 14 yards,
1 inch, the breadth required to make an acre.

Any required number of acres may be set off from the side of a
rectangular field, by first finding from the Table the breadth
required for 1 acre, and then multiplying that breadth by the
number of acres to be set off. If there are roods or poles in the
quantity required to be set off, take a proportional part of the
acre for these, which add to the breadth already found.

EXAMPLE. What breadth of a rectangular field, the side of
which is 198 yards in length, is required to contain a portion
measuring 3 acres, 1 rood, 5 poles ?

Find in the Table 198 yards the length,

To find the breadth required by calculation. Reduce the
quantity to be set off, to the same denomination as the given
length, divide the quantity so reduced, by the length, and the
quotient will be the breadth required, and in the same name or
denomination as the two factors.

The following is an arithmetical solution of the last example.

If it be required to set off a certain quantity from the side ot
a field, the side boundary being irregular, but the two ends of the
field parallel ; the content of the irregular portion or off set, must
first be found in the usual manner, and deducted from the given
quantity ; the width for the remaining portion will be found from

^ EXAMPLE. It is required to set off 2f acres from the irregular
side of a field, of which the end boundaries are parallel ; the length
between the two parallel ends being 133 yards, and the content
of the off-set, or irregular portion, having been ascertained to be
35 poles ; what width of the rectangular portion of the field will
be necessary to contain along with the off-set the required 2j
acres?

Width required of the rectangular portion of

To set off a certain quantity in the form of a triangle, from the
side of a field whose boundaries are straight and perpendicular to
each other.

RULE. 1. Since the area of a triangle is equal to half the area of
a parallelogram of the same altitude and base, take half the
length of the side which you propose to make the perpendicular
for the length, and find the width from the Table as formerly ;
measure off the width thus found along the adjoining- side, for the
ength of the base of the triangle, a straight line from the end of
which to the corner of the field or summit of the triangle will be
the boundary setting off the quantity required.

2. The same . result will be obtained by operating with the
whole 1 length of the perpendicular, for the length, and finding the
width for twice the given quantity to be set off.

If the field from which it is proposed to set off a certai i
quantity in a triangular form, has its boundaries straight, but is
not rectangular, let fall a perpendicular from the point which is
to be the summit of tfie triangle on the side which is proposed to
be the base, the measurement of which perpendicular is to be
taken for the length, and used to find the width or base of the
triangle, as directed in the case of the rectangular field.

EXAMPLE. It is required to set off 1 acre, 20 poles, in the
form of a triangle, from the side of a field the length of the per-
pendicular, from the summit to the base of the triangle, being
160 yards. Required the length of the base ?

By the first method in the Rule, viz., halving the perpendicular
for the length.

Look in the Table for 80 yards, equal half the length of the
perpendicular.

This Table shows the space or length passed over in ploughing
an acre, at any given width of furrow. Thus with a furrow 9
inches wide, the distance passed over is 19360 yards, or 1 1 miles ;
with a furrow of 10 inches wide, 17424 yards, or 9 miles, 7 fur-
longs, 8 poles, exclusive of turnings, &c. And when the average
rate or speed at which the cattle proceed is known, the time
necessary to plough a field, or any portion of it, of which the
content has been ascertained may be calculated. The Table also
shows what length of a drill or ridge, at any width, is required to
umke an acre.
