STAKES, &C., REQUIRED TO MAKE A FENCE, FROM 1 YARD TO 2000
YARDS IN LENGTH, AND FROM 1 INCH TO 15 INCHES APART FROM
EACH OTHER.



IN the left hand column of the page are found the lengths, rising
by 1 yard to 22 yards, by 10 yards from 30 to 100 yards, by
100 yards to 1500 yards, then 2000 yards ; the distances apart
run along the top of the pages, rising by 1 inch to 15 inches, and
under each is the number of thorns, die., required for a fence,
at any of the opposite lengths in the left hand column.

Note, Fractions of \ and upwards are counted as 1, and
those under \ are omitted altogether, in calculating this Table.

The Table may also be used for finding the number of any-
thing placed in rows or drills, the distance apart and the length
of the row being given. The number of tiles required for any
length of drain may also be found by this Table, the length of
the tile being given.

EXAMPLE 1. How many thorns are required to make a fence
2916 yards long, and 6 inches distant from each other?

Look in the Table under 6 inches, and opposite

2000 yards stands .... 12000
Opposite 900 yards stands . . . 5400

And opposite 16 yards stands . 96

Number of thorns required . 17496

EXAMPLE 2. How many paling stakes are required to enclose
a plantation, the circumference of which is 1490 yards, and the
distance between each stake is 9 inches ?

DESCRIPTION OF THE TABLE.



THE weight per yard is found in the left hand column of the
Table, rising by \ ounce to 4 ounces, thence by J pound to 1 pound,
and thence by J pound to the end of each dimension in the
Table. In the columns to the right hand, opposite any given j
weight per yard, under their respective denominations, is found '
the weight per Imperial, Scotch, and Irish acre, in tons, hundred-
weights, quarters, and pounds. At the top of each dimension or
breadth in the Table is stated the number of yards in length
of that breadth which are contained in an acre.

In order to get a fair average weight per yard to use with the
Table, it will be necessary to measure off 6 or 8 yards, and find
the weight of the produce thereon, which must be divided by
the number of yards measured off, to give the average weight
per yard. If the crop on the land seems to be unequal, several
parts of the field may be treated in the manner above mentioned,
the whole weights being added together, and divided by the
whole number of yards, which, if gone about correctly, may now
be considered a fair average weight per yard. It must be kept
in mind, that a small error in the weight of the average yard,
either over or under, becomes considerable, when multiplied, as
it will be, into every yard in the acre. In measuring for the
average of turnips, cabbages, and other plants in drills or rows,
care must be taken to begin and end the measurement in the
middle of the space between the first and last plant.

To find the average weight of each turnip, cabbage, <fcc., weigh
any number taken from the row or drill, in succession and with-
out selection, and divide the weight by the number; the quotient
is the average weight of each.

To find the number of turnips or plants of any kind on an
acre, ascertain the number on a yard at any of the dimensions
in the Table, and multiply that number by the number at the
top of the Table of the given dimension ; the product is the
number of plants, <fec., per acre. If there is only one plant per

yard in the given dimension, the number at the top of the Tablo
is the number per acre.

EXAMPLE 1. The average produce of a drill of potatoes has
been ascertained to be 4f pounds per yard, and the width of the
drill is 30 inches ; required the weight of the crop per Imperial,
Scotch, and Irish acre?

Look in the Table under 30 inches, and

EXAMPLE 2. A field of carrots is in drills 15 inches wide, and
the plants 10 inches apart in the drills ; the average weight of
the carrots in a yard in length of the drill, is 4 pounds; required
the number of carrots on an acre Imperial, Scotch and Irish,
also the weight of the crop per acre ?

To find the number of carrots, divide the inches in a yard =r 3G
by 10 inches, the distance between each = 3^- = 3f = the
number of carrots in a yard of the drill; then multiply the num-
bers of each denomination at the head of the Table at 15 inches
by 3|; the product is the number of carrots per acre.

after being cut and properly dried, was found to weigh, the grain
8J ounces, and the straw 17J ounces; required the weight of

bushels of wheat, at the rate of 64 Ibs. per bushel ?
